Formula One Race, Montreal

Tue Jun 14 21:24:05 2005 EDT (-0400 GMT)

Matt at Montreal F1 2005Last weekend I was at the F1 Race. An annual tradition my brother and I observe. This year Adam’s friend Matty came a long, and is the first person we’ve invited who knew the names before we left Toronto.

IT WAS HOT! Around 33 Co and very humid. We stayed in a camp south of Montreal, and I thankfully sprung for the power connection and brought a fan. We enjoyed cold beer on St. Laurient Street and drank lots of water during the race.

While I was there I used my iPod to record some interviews and sound-scapes for a Podcast I listen to, FormulaPod.com. The guys used a lot of it for their June 13th Podcast.

I’ve also put together a gallery of the photos I took, but the record setting crowds presented quite the obstacle.

For the record, Kimi Raikkonen won and the two Ferraris completed the podium.

What’s in my Dock 1.1

Tue Jun 7 19:45:01 2005 EDT (-0400 GMT)

What\'s In My dock 1Last year I did a little article on my work web site called “What’s in my dock” in my Mac Stuff section. I created it as a starting point for people new to OSX and it has become a starting point for reading my blog. With the latest news from Apple that they’re switching from the IBM/Motorola PowerPC processors to Intel Processes, plus the release of OSX Tiger I thought I’d quickly share some thoughts on the state of Apple and what’s in my dock these days, and pay particular note to Podcasting.

Tiger: In a word, Mengh. It corrupted my Mail files upon installation (good thing I have automatic nightly backups) and it didn’t get much better from there because Mail.app is now VERY Ugly. Spotlight is nice, but it’s slow if you compare it to the software available from Yahoo or Google for a PC. Dashboard and it’s widgets are useful to a point. On the plus side it boots faster and it has handy features stuck in a bunch of little places, like a useful password generator. In my opinion, stick with Panther unless you get a deal on Tiger.

The Intel situation: It’s not that big of a deal. The PowerPC G4 was good because it consumed very little power and ran well in laptops. The PowerPC G5 was amazing because it runs so fast and can control 8GB of RAM – but did it ever run hot! Now Apple will start to use Intel chips. Mainly because of the amount of computing power Intel can get per watt of electric power (especially with the Pentium M) – Not to mention the doloar to power ratio.

From the look of things it won’t be that difficult a transition because Apple is going to have an emulation/translation system built into the OS to make sure PowerPC software runs on Intel machines. Because the computer will only be providing emulation to the Application, not the OS or the libraries the program uses, it shouldn’t be slow and it will be transparent to the user. Plus Apple says that making an Intel version of current software will be very easy for developers.

Over all, no big deal. Even though Apple really is a hardware manufacture first and foremost, it’s the software that’s always interested me – the chip just has to work. The biggest problem will be trying to get some Mac users to understand why a P4 is better than a G5.

What’s in my doc 1.1:

The original can be found here: www.brocku.ca/~mclare/nix/ This is just an update with only the changes.

The Finder – Now the Tiger finder

OracleCalander – Work’s common scheduling thing. Use iCal.

iPodderXMy Pod CastsPodcasting, the future of radio! Basically a Podcast is an audio show/file that you subscribe to. You choose what you’re interested in and when a new episode is released it is downloaded by your pod cast client. IF you have an iPod it can be copied onto it, otherwise you can listen on your computer or copy it to your lesser music player. I listen to a lot of radio, be it CBC or 102.1 the Edge over the air or the BBC over the internet, I enjoy radio. Now I get great shows like This Week in Tech and The Daily Source Code.

Mail.app – Apple’s Mail program.

Address Book

iPhoto – Now supporting Video from your camera and with a way better editing screen. I no longer have to export things that require more than a crop to Fireworks.

MS Office Suite – Still the best Office suite around.

The Macromedia Suite – Still the best web developing suite there is.

iTunes – Think iPodderX was cool? Guess what, it’s functions are coming to iTunes! Just update your iTunes in about a month and you can start listening to interesting and entertaining podcasts. iTunes – now the best audio (not just music) jukebox there is.

Firefox – Best browser going.

TextWrangler – Just as good as BBEdit but this free application has more features than the last free version of BBEdit and is intended by Bare Bones Inc. to be a replacement to that old free version. One cool function: FTP or SFTP editing of text files on remote servers.

Acquisition – My current Kazaa equivalent after I paid the $15 for the full version.

Azureus – Bit torrent client

Adium – My last ‘What’s in my doc’ has iChat and MSN messenger: Adium replaces them both. Not only can Adium allow you to connect to the two services with one client it also gives you feature Microsoft has yet to port over to the Mac. It does not support the audio and video conferencing iChat supports, but that is rarely an issue.

Cyberduck – An SFTP and FTP client. Previously I had been using Fugu, but it only supported the secure SFTP — good for everyday stuff but some sites/servers did not support SFTP and I had use Apple’s clunky built-in support or older, buggy, versions of Cyberduck. It seems like they’ve got it all sorted and Cyberduck has more features, performance and abilities than Fugu.

DropTar – Packaging and zipping things

Network Tool – I use networks.

VLC – The best video player there is.

iTerm – Tabbed Terminals

Professionally Speaking

Fri Jun 3 20:14:36 2005 EDT (-0400 GMT)

The first step towards a degree in Education: I’m on the cover of the Ontario College of Teachers’ quarterly publication “Professionally Speaking”. The magazine was doing a profile on the 40th graduating class of education students at Brock University. I just work at Brock, and graduated with an honours degree in Communications Policy – but apparently it’s all about who you know.

A prof who I had worked with was coordinating the photo shoot and knew where he could quickly grab some ‘attractive young people’ who weren’t dressed in black. So one moment Giulia (dressed in pink — and actually an Education grad in Brock’s 39th year) and I were working in our respective offices, the next moment we’re in a photo shoot for the cover of Professionally Speaking.

In the end it wasn’t a total free ride. When my parents received their copy (both teachers) they did not see their son since there was a cell phone ad covering Giulia and myself.

Belinda tempted to The Liberal Side

Wed Jun 1 13:36:54 2005 EDT (-0400 GMT)

I seem to get Darth Vador impersonations into my blog a lot……

A few weeks ago after Belinda Stronach (a Canadian Tory politician that’s been the least right-wing-nut of the bunch) crossed the floor to join the Liberal party to ensure that a confidence vote would pass and Canada wouldn’t have another federal election within a year of it’s last one.

It was quite the juciey political story, attractive young politician (a story in itself in the Conservative party,) romantically linked to the deputy leader of the party (Peter McCay), defects to a cabinet position in the ruling party and crushes her ex-party’s plans for over throwing the government.

Belinda Stronach effectivly created the new Conservative party by acting as a go between for the old PC/Tory party and the Reform/Alliance party which looked as though they could never merge and be a credible alternative to the Liberal rule of Canada. Then she left her job as CEO of Magna International to run for the leadership of the party, a real working-your-way-up-from-the-top career path.

Apparently, morally conflicted, but perhaps just part of that career path, she was forced to join the Liberal party that her father Frank Stronach had actually ran (and lost) as a few decades ago and Belinda had spent two years vilifying.

The morning after the CBC Radio show “The Current,” which always opens with it’s James Earl Jones-like announcer known as “The Voice” giving a cheeky two minute bit, tempted Belinda to “The Liberal Side”. It was comedic genius and my sides literally hurt after I heard it. I’ve since recounted it poorly, so I thought I’d share the transcript — please try your best to read the following in character (reprinted from “The Current”, CBC Radio, May 18, 2005 – with attribution, but not permission:)

Better yet, listen to the broadcast here (Realaudio): http://www.cbc.ca/thecurrent/media/200505/20050518thecurrent_sec1.ram

VOICE: (Darth Vader breathing) Belinda, Belinda … why do you fight the Liberals?

BELINDA: Because I’m a Conservative, because the Liberals are corrupt, because we need fiscal responsibility….

VOICE: (DV breathing) Scott Brison fought bravely for the Conservatives. But only the Liberals could give him power.

BELINDA: But I’m here to serve Canadians, not just grab power….

VOICE: (DV breathing) Don’t be a fool! Your leader claims virtue and integrity, but he stands in your way. Come to the Liberal side, and a cabinet post awaits you. Lucienne Robillard has displeased me, anyway.

BELINDA: Your offer of power is tempting … and yet power corrupts.

VOICE: (DV Breathing) It is your destiny.

BELINDA: I represent a strong voice for women in politics, and I’ll determine my own destiny.

VOICE: (DV Breathing) Belinda, join me on the Liberal side, and together we shall rule the country.

BELINDA: (Defiantly) No.

VOICE: (DV Breathing) Belinda, I am your father.

BELINDA: (Pause) Dad? What’s with the black cape?

VOICE: (Breathing stops. Speaks in casual non-Vader voice) It’s my new power suit. Very intimidating in the Magna boardroom.

BELINDA: All right, all right. I’ll join your party. But only to bring strength and stability to the government.

VOICE: YESSS!! (Pause…Breathing begins again and use Vader voice until the end) Now, there is another … he is close to Belinda … a Conservative, yet the centre is strong with him … If we bring him to the Liberal side, the red tories shall take their revenge. (Vader-style breathing) Peter … Peter …

Bell Sympatico banned as a spammer.

Thu May 26 14:56:27 2005 EDT (-0400 GMT)

On the Bell network, want to send me eMail? Well you can’t.

Apparently someone’s been using their Bell Sympatico eMail account to send spam, this got someone’s attention and they ‘punished’ them by adding them to the spammers list at uceprotect.net. My eMail provider and web host subscribes to the free list of banned servers that uceprotect.net provides, and good for them for protecting me. Shame on Sympatico for letting this happen.

According to their web site if no-one sends spam from Sympatico’s servers (bellnexxia.net) for seven days they’ll remove them from the list:

http://www.uceprotect.net/en/index.php?m=7&s=6

To get your IP off our List, you have to make your System stop sending mail to our Spamtraps first.
After your System stopped spamming there are 2 ways to have your IP removed from our blacklist:

FREE OF CHARGE REMOVAL:
There is no need for you to request removal, if you do not want to pay.
Every IP at Level 1 will expire 7 Days after the last mail from it hit our SPAMTRAPS.
This means your IP will be removed automatically after that period.

PAID IMMEDIATE REMOVAL :
If you do not want to wait 7 Days, you may request a paid immediate removal.
Fee for this is 50 Euros per IP. Payments are accepted by Paypal only.
Removal will be done by hand, as soon as Paypal tells us, they received your money.
Click here if you want to request a paid removal.

Here’s a copy of the eMail someone was sent back when my mail server declared bell’s server omts37.bellnexxia.net, 209.226.175.94 a spammer.

(eMail address changed to protect myself and others from more spam!)
