The Netherlands: Off to Amsterdam
We took the ferry from Dover to Calais because our destination was to the east..... I also think it was cheaper then the Chunnel.
Once we landed in Calais we drove through Belgium, the seat of the EU Parliament, and on into the Netherlands and Holland
One of the older European capitals. Amsterdam is beautiful. | We stayed in a Contiki run hostel near this really cool park. | No cars can drive through the park, but its the bike traffic across this bike lane that one has to worry about.
Skate parks set up by the city in public spaces shared by all generations is a bit of a theme for our tour. | The Van Gogh Museum backs on to the park. | More of Van Gogh's back side. | And here's the end of this little photo shoot, where I dropped Adam's lens-cover and then had to retrace the entire walk to find it. |
So I made the most of things and did some more walking and photography. | Still in this very cool downtown park. | Taken from atop of < that triangle. | " "Go West Young Man" - been there, done that, it's not all it's cracked up to be. |
Theme tow: Fire trucks across Europe. | Next on to the boat cruse to explore downtown Amsterdam. | Olaf, our tour guide with the 'fro that is probably a safety percussion for work. | That's cool. |
Some particularly cool houses along one of Amsterdam's many water-ways, it's like more hygienic and functional Venice. Did you know the houses are so narrow because the Dutch used to be taxed by the width of their house. | After the boat tour we went through the red-light district and checked out Amsterdam by night and did some Amster-damage. Apparently Holland is one of the two things astronauts can see from space as it glows from all the light in such a concentrated space. | Time was always short so the next morning we headed off to the Heineken brewery, note the clock. | The pictures didn't turn out that well because the light wasn't that good inside the 'brouwery'. That said, the "Heineken Experience" is worthy of a museum, with interactive games, simulations and parts of the old brewery laid out to explain the brewing process that has been in use for centuries. |
I took this photo, I thank the Heineken web site for these two >>
