{"id":762,"date":"2009-08-04T20:20:34","date_gmt":"2009-08-05T00:20:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mattclare.ca\/wordpress\/?p=762"},"modified":"2009-08-06T23:12:51","modified_gmt":"2009-08-07T03:12:51","slug":"my_server","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mattclare.ca\/blog\/2009\/08\/04\/my_server\/","title":{"rendered":"Setting up a server"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since I just went through the process of setting-up my own self-managed VPS (virtual private server) system I figured I&#8217;d share my experience in the hopes that it will help someone else with some basic command-line comfort looking to gain control of their web hosting or being the process of scaling up.<\/p>\n<p>This is the start of what I hope will be a brief series of blog posts describing the process.<\/p>\n<p>I went with a VPS system because of the considerable cost savings over a full dedicated system and the ability to scale-up from a low-power system to a high-powered system.  In fact, I did just that when I initially opted for the 128mb system, but found that I need 256mb.  My VPS (and previously shared host) is <a href=\"http:\/\/a2WebHosting.com\">A2 Web Hosting<\/a> and they&#8217;ve been pretty good to work with.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what <a href=\"http:\/\/mattclare.ca\">mattclare.ca<\/a> is currently running, I&#8217;ll go through each elements and how I&#8217;ve configured them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CentOS 5 Linux Operating System\n<p>Including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Installing the basic files and packages<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.centos.org\/HowTos\/Network\/SecuringSSH\">Securing SSH and the rest of the server<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The Apache web server<\/li>\n<li>MySQL database<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Google\/Gmail for mail (and calendaring, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>JungleDisk\/Amazon Webservers for backup<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since I just went through the process of setting-up my own self-managed VPS (virtual private server) system I figured I&#8217;d share my experience in the hopes that it will help someone else with some basic command-line comfort looking to gain control of their web hosting or being the process of scaling up.
