My web site passnerd.com has had some recent updates.

Here’s what to look for:

There’s a new complexity picker.

The site has got even more light-weight and should load even faster than before.

There is a new mobile version ( preview it at passnerd.com/?mobile )

You can enter the password length into the URL, for example: 6 characters passnerd.com/6 , 12 passnerd.com/12 , 32 passnerd.com/32 — worth bookmarking.

The site still is a quick way to have a scure password suggested to you from work done one YOUR computer, not “my” end. I created the site as a service to those who need it, and it makes pennies a year, but one of these days if it earns enough I’ll create an HTTPS version – but I want to stress that it’s just as secure without it because it uses JavaScript on YOUR computer’s end to create the password.

I’m always looking for suggestions or feedback from anyone that is willing to share them.

After a lot of planning, sawing, hammering and a little bit of screwing [up] it is finally ready. I think I had a good plan and I benefited from [grand]dad’s experience.

In the interest of practicing what I teach I modeled two walls worth of wainscotting in the tiny room via Google SketchUp. It helped to both visualize the plan and explain it to Lindsay and my dad. The SketchUp model also helped when it game to dividing space evenly and dealing with the irrational system the is the imperial measuring system.

If anyone else is interested in a simple wainscotting plan, here’s the Google SketchUp plans and the Home Depot suplies:

The raised parts are 3/4″ x 36″ 1/2″ Primed Fiberboard mounted on 1/4″x48″x96″ STD Hardboard. It was cutdown at Home Depot to 1/4″x 37″ x96″ – both to make it a good hight for the room, and to make it fit in the back of my car.

The hardest part, other than all the leveling was the joins. The room is ~126″ x ~111″ – and the STD Hardboard is only 96″ long each wall. There was a liberal use of wood filler to help join the two.

I’ll also get trim for the “chair rail” and quarter round for the bottom, but I didn’t add that to the drawing.

Car and Driver has started a new campaign: Save the Manuals!

As a fan of rowing my own gears I have to throw my support behind manual transmissions.

I’m a fan, but many aren’t. When I bought my last two used cars I had to cast a very wide net to find a manual transmission. They don’t have a high “take rate” and some vehicles don’t even offer a manual transmission to reduce development and manufacturing costs. I can’t argue with the manufactures logic – but I do have to wonder why drivers don’t want more control.

I know what gear ratio I want and far too often an automatic transmission doesn’t, and beyond that changes the ratio when its not wanted and not change it when its needed. Some vehicles allow drivers to use things like paddle-shifters to control what gear they are in, but the shift often takes longer than a second and that’s way too late.

Porche’s PDK and VW/Audi’s dual-clutch systems amongst others use a clutch and gearbox, not an automatic transmission, to remove the need for the driver to operate a cluch and have a computer control the it for you. Porche driver’s appreciate more control over their transmission than an automatic can provide, but they can’t be the only ones.

One of the most enjoyable cars I’ve ever driven is an 80s Ford Fiesta with three cylinder with a 5spd manual. I’m certain that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy that car as much without being able to ring all I could have out of the engine.

Long live the manual transmission! We let ignition timing and choke operation slip out of our hands – lets not give up the manual transmission too!

Interesting and insightful comment from Billy Corgan while in Cleveland to kick off the Pumpkins latest world tour:

Do you go online to see what the fans are saying about the new tracks?

No, but I still get a vibe. If I read anything from let’s call it the “hardcore fanbase,” they are stuck in ’93. It’s 17 years [later] and I don’t know what they expect to have happen. It’s sort of beautiful because what they are saying is, “You so touched me in that moment, I want more of that.” But the thing that I find really insulting is there’s a deeper message there which is “You’ll never be better.” To try to tell a man that he’ll never improve beyond something he did when he was half-crocked on drugs or drama, that’s just not right. When I look at Johnny Cash or Neil Young or Tom Waits, those guys have proven that by remaining vital to themselves, that at some point they are able to burst through with another period.

As reported by “The Rolling Stone” www.rollingstone.com/music/news/17386/181497

For the record, I’m aware I’m that guy and just because I’m not that excited about the new music does not make want the Pumpkins to start doing casino gigs “playing all of the hits you love”.

Billy’s an artist, he should keep creating art for any reason he wants and it’s his dedication to that pursuit that made me a fan in the first place.

That said, if CSNY&Corgan unite I’ll go to their concert anywhere no matter what they play!

“Tonight’s the night, Tonight’s the greatest night I’ve ever know?”

foursquare.com/ is a web site and mobile app that lets users “check-in” at locations. The social side that many enjoy is being able to discover your friends at locations, make new ones, and bring exciting elements of the internet to your physical spaces. Also, there’s “badges” like “Mayor” or “bender” people can earn for checking-in at a location enough times. People like badges.

I’m not a foursquare user, but I feel like I know enough about the service to understand its appeal and its danger.

Sites like pleaserobme.com/ made a joke to highlight the danger is publicly telling people where you are, “because it leaves one place you’re definitely not… home.” Their goal is to scare both users and services like enough to address this issue.

Shea Sylvia had a much more visceral scare. She’s OK, but the experience clearly had an impact on her: blog.sheasylvia.com/post/809428679

I also appreciate her acknowledgement that her mother will probably read her blog post. I know my mother’s the number one reader of my blog.

Update: BinaryParadox ( twitter.com/BinaryParadox ) tipped me off about icanstalku.com — uses camera EXIF information posted to twitter posts to get the location of the person posting the picture.

Last summer we signed-up to be Peaksavers. In the middle of the summer of 2010′s first heave wave in Ontario I’m still keen.

Once we had signed-up Burlington Hydro sent someone over to install a new thermostat. The new thermostat allows Burlington Hydro / The Peaksaver program to send a signal to raise the temperature in our house by 2 degrees Celsius over 4 hours. Apparently the message is sent infrequently and only on weekdays and you can opt out twice a year. They sweetened the deal with a $25 credit on our bill.

One of the features we’ve made a lot of use of is the Online Control Centre. It allows you to program the thermostat via the web from anywhere in the world. For us it’s been a good way to change the temperature back to a livable temperature before we arrive home from being on the road.

I mentioned to the gentleman who installed the thermostat that I was looking forward to meters that account for time-of-use. He pointed out that it disproportionately affects the elderly and new mothers, as they are the ones that are home during peak-price hours. Fair comment. But I really feel that people need to pay the real price of energy and be responsible for the decisions that make about its use.

The environment, it’s exploitation and climate change and the global response it requires.

Sovereign debut levels….. of poor countries.

Maternal health AND family planning.

The rights of women and minorities in discriminatory cultures.

The many diseases that disproportionally affect poor countries.

Issues I couldn’t care less about include “Who’s streets are who’s” and who started the fire, you or the police cruiser.

I appreciated all the positive feedback in the session and via Twitter.

During my presentation I warned the individuals in the room that “your faculty are Google’ing Sakai help and ending up at our wiki right now because MediaWiki has such good SEO”. After the session someone confirmed that a faculty member had indeed told him that he found help for “this Isaak, but it worked with Sakai”.

I updated the original blog posting the presentation was based on to include the presentation slides and the video. It is at mattclare.ca/blog/2009/11/23/using-a-wiki-to-document-isaak-brock-universitys-sakai-based-lms/

I might post some of my notes and reflections here later.

During lunch with Don Cherry in Philadelphia Ron MacLean responded to someone looking for help to save a drowning man by jumping into the Delaware to save the man who was apparently trying to take his life. Written up here: http://www.theprovince.com/mobile/story.html?id=3108588

My response was to make fun of this man who is national treasure:

Ron MacLean jumps into the Delaware river to save a man while Don Cherry stands on shore and signals rescue aircraft with his jacket.

Ron MacLean was able to rescue that guy because he is used to working with dead weight.

Ron MacLean was able to be cool under pressure because he’s used to working with the man beside him complaining that he’s running out of time.

Run MacLean asked the man he pulled out of the river in Philadelphia if he received a “brotherly shove”. The man asked to be thrown back.

Run MacLean saved this mans life, but he was trying to take his life. Bud Selig, commissioner of Major League Baseball, has ruled “too bad” he still has to die.

I’ve been looking for a modification for my new-to-me car to help make it my own. I searched around the forums that deal with the Acura CSX and the Honda Civic and quickly realized that the simple “bolt-on” modifications available for the Honda Civic don’t work with the CSX as it has a slightly larger engine that was borrowed from the Acura RSX.

I started to home in on the engine’s air intake as a good place to focus my efforts. An air intake that allows more air to pass into the engine can increase the power (a little bit), this is done by decreasing the amount of effort to draw air into the engine and ensure there’s always enough. Less restricted air intakes also tend to improve the sound of the engine by allowing more induction noise to be heard.

Some Acura CSX owners had tried applying other Honda Civic-intended air intakes, but they would tend to trip the Check Engine light. The solution a lot of owners were coming to was modifying the airbox top cover to fit a generic cone-type air filter. The modifications involved trimming away most of the cover’s plastic and attaching a standard 3′ flange cone-type air filter to the now exposed tube. This not only involves a better filter but allows air to be drawn from more locations than the restrictive tube that leads to the front of the car – this could be the cause of the cars not-so-great throttle response.

Many Acura/CSX forums detail this DIY process, CSX DRIVER (login required – probably the best how-to), Acura Forum and this YouTube video of an obnoxious kid.

I ordered a new airbox cover from Acura and when it arrived I sat in the backyard with my Dremel rotary tool and my jig saw and trimmed away the majority of the cover. I retained the collar that clips to the lower part of the old air box, with the exception of about most of the collar directly across from where the filter attaches to the intake tube. This was to give the filter enough space so as not to rub the plastic collar.

After all the little plastic bits had been cleaned up and I was happy with the work I installed it on the car. The original intake cover was unclipped and old filter removed – and saved. The new intake added was slipped down with the remnants of its collar and the actual intake tube attached. The air sensor had to be removed from the original and installed on the new one, which only involved two screws and transferring one wire clip.

Once the new intake was installed I made sure to rev the engine a few times. Here’s the video, you’ll notice that the engine note is a lot raspier and louder on wide open throttle. A quick drive rewarded me with way better sound on wide open throttle (sorry if that was your country home I went by at 70Km in 2nd gear) and whats more is the improved throttle response. This is what I really appreciate, as it helps when I’m matching revs on a downshifts.

That’s my upgrade. I’d recommend it to anyone with the interest and knowhow.

I’m not presenting at the Ontario University Computing Conference (OUCC) this year, but I am part of a panel:

Birds of a feather: Changing Learning Management Systems

Other panel members include:

Kyle Mackie, University of Guelph

It’s too bad I’m not willing to be more of a Sakai zealot, because someone needs to do a conference presentation this summer titled “BlackBoard/WebCT: It’s easier to quit than Facebook”.

Update: Friday May 14, 2010

It is worth noting that Matt McKeon’s infographic assumes a user has left their privacy settings at the default. If you go through the 50 settings with more than 170 options you can eventually configure your Facebook privacy to be more like 2006. The New York Times has their own infographic to explain these settings:
